I have recently changed my cat's diet to James Wellbeloved. He
thoroughly enjoys it but I am concerned that feeding a dry food
will have a detrimental effect on his urinary system.
As far as urinary tract health is concerned, there are no
inherent problems with feeding a good quality dry food, but
you do need to make sure your cat has free access to clean, fresh
water at all times.
We have taken a number of steps in the formulation of our
complete cat foods to help maintain a healthy urinary tract.
Firstly we have a controlled level of magnesium (0.1%), which can
help to maintain urinary tract health, including struvite crystals,
of which magnesium is a constituent. The food has also been
formulated to produce a urine pH of 6.6, this means that the urine
is slightly acidic to help to discourage the development of
crystals and bacterial growth in the bladder. Also incorporated
into the diet is cranberry extract, the polyphenol compounds in
this can help to maintain urinary tract health by encouraging the
elimination of bacteria via the urine. These combined factors can
help to keep your cat in good health whilst still allowing him to
enjoy is favourite food.
Please note that if your cat is currently under
veterinary treatment for FLUTD, advice should be sought prior to
feeding. Please do not hesitate to call our dedicated helpline on

I have noticed that there is chicory extract in your complete
cat food, what benefits does this have?
The plant Chicory (Cichorium ingybus), is a member of
the dandelion family and the purpose of adding chicory extract to
the food is to act as a digestive aid. Chicory is a natural
source of Fructo-oligo-saccharides (FOS) which are naturally
occurring sugars that are also known as prebiotics.
Prebiotics have the ability to help promote the growth of
beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract, which in turn, help to
improve the digestion of food and assist in the absorption of
nutrients into the body. The end result is that the cat gains
greater benefit from the food that it eats and it also helps to
maintain a healthy and efficient digestive system.
I've heard that you add Yucca to your cat diets, what benefits
does this have?
We add Yucca extract to all our cat products. This is an
ingredient that is added as it has a number of potential
benefits. Firstly it is a natural deodoriser and can help to
reduce faecal odour, which is of benefit to owners whose cats live
entirely indoors or use litter trays. It is also a source of
saponin and is thought to help flush out pathogenic bacteria from
the digestive tract and increase the absorption of
nutrients.
How do I know when to change my cat from the kitten
variety to the adult variety?
After a kitten is weaned, the growth rate is very rapid and it
is an extremely demanding time for the kitten in terms of
nutritional requirements. The James Wellbeloved kitten diets
are tailor made to meet these high nutritional requirements. They
contain easily digested ingredients, are high in protein and
energy, contain the correct balance of vitamins and minerals and
are very palatable. Kittens need to eat quite a lot of food
in relation to their body weight and their stomachs are relatively
small, therefore it is best to offer smaller, more frequent meals
for the first six months. After this age the meals can be
reduced to twice daily although it is recommended to continue
feeding the Kitten variety until they are a year old. This
ensures that they have received all the necessary vitamins,
minerals and nutrients to enable them to develop into strong,
healthy adult cats.
After neutering
After neutering you may need to reduce the amount fed, to help
maintain a happy and healthy weight.
How long do I need to continue giving my kitten milk?
Once a kitten has been successfully weaned from its mother, the
kitten will no longer have a nutritional requirement for milk in
its diet. In actual fact, many cats lose the ability to
digest the sugar contained in milk (lactose) and therefore feeding
milk can actually cause them to have diarrhoea or vomiting. After
weaning, healthy kittens have no requirement for milk, especially
if you are feeding a complete and balanced food such as the James
Wellbeloved Complete Kitten Food.
